Internship Program

The purpose of the Dana Walters Scholarship Foundation
is to provide post-secondary educational funds for Georgia
Cystic Fibrosis young adults. We are a non-profit charity organization that receives no financial aid. We depend strictly
on donations. We have been organized since 1994 and had our first graduate June 14, 1997. At present we have nine
students on the scholarship program.
Because the life expectancy of a Cystic Fibrosis young adult now is in excess of thirty years, it is necessary to plan for a
future. This means attending college or trade schools so that these people can be productive members of society. It is up
to us as a community to support them in their efforts so that they can "give back" rather than "take". It is for this
reason that we have implemented the Dana Walters Scholarship Foundations' intern program.
Employment is very difficult to achieve when you have a chronic disease. Immediate concerns for employers include
absenteeism and health insurance. Thanks to the Kennedy-Kassenbaum bill that became effective in 1998 insurance is
not the concern that it once was. Absenteeism is no more an issue with a CF person than one with "normal" health. Most
CF persons have good health because they work very hard at preventive care.
We are proposing the following guidelines for the internship program:
A person must be qualified for the job that is available. This must be documented by previous work or on a
recommendation by a teacher.
The internship should last no more than eight weeks.
The internship can be terminated at any time if the work is not satisfactory.
The employer will send a letter that details what responsibilities are required and gave a job performance evaluation on
completion of assignment.
An intern can be hired at any time during the program if the employer feels that he/she is qualified.
There is no responsibility on the employers part for transportation or parking fees.
At the end of the internship, the Dana Walters Scholarship Foundation will receive a written assessment of the work
done by the student. It is understood that no financial reward will be expected by the student for the time that he/she is
employed as an intern. It is further understood that in contracting for internship that there is no guarantee of
employment with the company.
By agreeing to have Cystic Fibrosis young adults working in your business, there is no liability on the part of the Dana
Walters Scholarship Foundation. All work is done based on an agreement strictly between the company and the
individual named.
